Soot on the ceiling in January
A man came in near closing with a question and no jar in his hands. He lives above a shop closer to the water, one large room, a plaster ceiling, heat that comes on in a rush from a vent overhead. He had burned a candle on a low shelf under that vent for four evenings. The shelf was fine. The ceiling had a gray oval, darker at the center, and he wanted to know if the candle was defective.
We asked what the flame had been doing when the heat started. He said it shuddered. He had not trimmed it after the first night. The wick had a small black knuckle at the top, and he thought that was ordinary because the candle still smelled like balsam.
A knuckle on a cotton wick is a carbon cap. The braid should end in a short, even tip, about 6 mm above the wax, which is the cut described on Wicks. When the tip mushrooms, the flame widens and cools at the edge. The edge smokes. You may not see a plume across the room. You will see it later, as a shadow on the paint, usually above the candle and a little downwind of the vent.
January in Portland makes this easy to miss and easy to cause. The windows stay shut. The heat cycles for hours. A flame that would have been left alone in September is now sitting in a stream of air every time the system kicks. The room is also dim by late afternoon, so the candle stays lit longer than it would in June. Four hours under a cycling vent is enough to stain old plaster. Dark paint hides it. White and off-white ceilings, which are what we hear about, do not.
We do not dye our jars dark, partly for this reason. A heavy dye load adds material the flame has to burn. The coconut-soy we use is off-white. Bayberry tints it a little. None of them are black, and none of them are meant to smoke if the wick is short and the air is still.
We told him to stop burning anything under that vent, to trim before the next lighting, and to keep a single candle to about three hours when the heat is running hard. We did not sell him a cleaner. A soft cloth will take a fresh film off glass. A ceiling that has baked soot into the paint is a painting problem, not a wax problem. We do not do that work, and we do not pretend a new jar erases the oval.
He was annoyed at the vent by the end of it, which is the right target. If your ceiling has started a shadow, look up once while the candle is lit. If the flame is dancing, the shadow is not a mystery, and another scent will not make the air hold still.
